Clinical Trainings for Youth Substance Use Services

Clinical Trainings for Youth Substance Use Services is a series of trainings aimed at equipping mental health professionals, substance use counselors, and service providers in Los Angeles County with tools and knowledge on issues surrounding youth substance use and treatment. This series of trainings were created by Dr. Rachel Gonzales-Castaneda and her research team at Azusa Pacific University (APU) for Department of Public Health (DPH) Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC). Continued education credits for a range of disciplines are provided for most of these trainings.

Participants will be equipped with knowledge and skills in responding to co-occurring mental health and SUD complexities among youth populations, including LGBTQ+ youth, youth experiencing homelessness and housing instability, as well as, justice-involved youth.

Youth Services Programming

The service programming components covered include screening and assessment, case management, clinical supervision best practices, and the use of technology-based tools.

Co-Occurring Needs

In these trainings, participants will be exposed to best practice approaches to addressing co-occurring mental health and substance use service needs among youth. Within this set of trainings, participants can also learn effective strategies to engage youth and developmental considerations, such as the unique program needs for transitional-aged youth and young adults.

Youth Substance Use Considerations

In these trainings, participants are provided with research and practice considerations regarding commonly used substances by youth and specific substance-related impacts on psycho-social development.

Family-Based Services

In these trainings, participants are exposed to the benefits of integrating family systems into youth services by highlighting engagement strategies and therapeutic practices and techniques to enhance the services of youth at risk for, and with SUDs.

Cultural and Diversity Considerations

In these trainings, participants are guided in understanding the role that social and cultural factors play in substance use risk and protective trajectories for SUD risk and disorders, including the importance of integrating cultural competence models into service delivery. Participants are encouraged to enhance their awareness of the vast and diverse populations of youth in need of SUD services and how to be respectful of socio-cultural backgrounds and experiences during care.
