Description
The COVID-19 Pandemic brought significant impacts to individuals, families, communities that have implications for youth system of care service settings. This three (3)-hour training will offer a broad overview of COVID-19 impact and an overview of the current landscape of the application of technology services to address such impacts. This training also covers provider workforce experiences with telehealth in youth systems and a review of best practices for navigating technology service considerations and challenges with youth and families.
Learning Objectives
- Discuss at least two (2) ways the COVID-19 pandemic impacted youth, families, communities, and its implications for youth systems of care.
- Identify at least two (2) benefits and two (2) challenges associated with the implementation of technology services for addressing substance use issues among youth populations.
- Explain important lessons learned about technology practice from youth providers and youth system workforce considerations regarding practice improvement efforts.
- Describe at least two (2) empirically supported best practices for navigating technology service considerations and challenges with youth and families.
Intended Audience
Healthcare professionals and treatment providers working with youth substance use populations, including Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors, Registered and Certified Counselors and associate/interns/students working under the supervision of licensed clinicians.
Instructor
Dr. Howard Padwa
Howard Padwa, Ph.D. is a health services and qualitative researcher at UCLA's Integrated Substance Abuse Programs (UCLA-ISAP). He has led qualitative data collection and analyses for mixed-methods studies of mental health system transformation, behavioral health service integration, evidence-based practice implementation, and the creation of a full continuum of care for substance use disorder treatment under California's Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery System (DMC-ODS) Medicaid 1115 Waiver. In addition, he has conducted historical research on drug policy in the United States and overseas, served as project director for an initiative to integrate adolescent substance use prevention and early intervention services into healthcare and school settings nationwide, and facilitated stakeholder engagement for several projects. Currently, Dr. Padwa leads several evaluations of initiatives to provide integrated services for homeless and other populations in Los Angeles, and he is co-investigator on a PCORI-funded study examining substance use disorder treatment assessment and decision-making.

Format
This online course uses a mixed-media format with PowerPoint slides, voice-overs, and closed captions.
Process
At the start of the training, participants will be given a pre-test assessment. During the training, participants will read or listen to the material presented in the slides. At the end of the training, participants will need to pass the training post-test with a score of 80% or better to print a certificate of completion and receive CE credits.
CE Approval
This course meets the qualifications for one (1.0) hour of continuing education credit/contact hours (CEs/CEHs). Los Angeles County (LAC)-Department of Public Health (DPH) Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC) is an approved provider of continuing education for CMPSS (CalMHSA, #1014); CAODCs, SUDRCs, SUDCCs (CADTP, #181); RADTs I/II, CADCs-CASs, CADCs I/II, CADCs-CSs and LAADCs (CCAPP, #4-19-316-0227); and, CATCs I/II/III/IV/V/N/i/R (CAADE CEU Provider #: CP40 989 AHC 0725).
