Engaging Families and Providing Family-Based Services

Learning Objectives

1. Describe the current state of family engagement models within various family systems in behavioral health settings that serve youth with co-occurring behavioral issues.
2. Recognize evidence-based strategies for identifying and addressing common barriers associated with engaging families in behavioral health services that serve youth.
3. Utilize at least one practice strategy for engaging families throughout the treatment cycle using a case study scenario.
4. Identify at least two culturally appropriate resources to apply in practice for enhancing family engagement in substance use treatment settings that serve youth.

• Registered and Certified Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselors
• LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs & Licensed Eligible (LE) AMFTs, ACSWs, APCCs 
• Psychologists & Registered Psychological Associates
• Certified Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialists & Peer Support Specialists

Instructor
Samuel Girguis, PsyD, is a licensed clinical psychologist who has extensive experience delivering youth and family services for behavioral health issues. Dr. Girguis worked at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles providing outpatient treatment services to youth and families experiencing child abuse, foster care, community violence and homelessness.

Danielle Lascano, Ed.D., AMFT, is trained in community mental health and working with youth and families in social welfare systems focused in grief and trauma. In 2017, she began working with the Building Forever Families Initiative, creating an evidence based curriculum and training coaches to improve the visitation process in the foster care system.

Format
This online course uses a mixed-media format with PowerPoint slides, voice-overs, and closed captions.

Process
At the start of the training, participants will be given a pre-test assessment. During the training, participants will read or listen to the material presented in the slides. At the end of the training, participants will need to pass the training post-test with a score of 80% or better to print a certificate of completion and receive CE credits. 

CE Approval
This course meets the qualifications for one (1.0) hour of continuing education credit/contact hours (CEs/CEHs). Los Angeles County (LAC)-Department of Public Health (DPH) Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC) is an approved provider of continuing education for CMPSS (CalMHSA, #1014); CAODCs, SUDRCs, SUDCCs (CADTP, #181); RADTs I/II, CADCs-CASs, CADCs I/II, CADCs-CSs and LAADCs (CCAPP, #4-19-316-0227); and, CATCs I/II/III/IV/V/N/i/R (CAADE CEU Provider #: CP40 989 AHC 0725). Los Angeles County-Department of Public Health (LAC-DPH) Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC) is approved by the California Psychological Association to provide continuing professional education for psychologists. The California Board of Behavioral Sciences accepts continuing education credit granted by the California Psychological Association or by any of its Approved Providers. LAC-DPH SAPC maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
