Description
In this training, participants will be exposed to the continuum of care for youth with a substance use disorder (SUD) and adequate treatment response using evidence-based treatment practices. The training primarily covers skills in the following evidence based treatment practices that have been shown to be promising for addressing SUDs among youth: Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). The participant will be expected to demonstrate skills in facilitating individualized treatment plans using MI and CBT through a practical application. The training will also review DSM-5 criteria associated with SUD progress and remission among youth with SUDs.

Learning Objectives

1. Accurately describe the continuum of care and adequate treatment response for SUDs among youth.
2. Accurately identify evidence-based therapeutic practices for addressing youth who meet SUD medical necessity criteria.

   Describe SUD treatment progress and SUD remission based on DSM-5 criteria for youth.

Intended Audience
Healthcare professionals and treatment providers working with youth substance use populations, including Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors, Registered and Certified Counselors and associate/interns/students working under the supervision of licensed clinicians.

Instructor
Dr. Rachel Gonzales-Castaneda, PhD, MPH

Dr. Gonzales-Castaneda is an Associate Professor with the Azusa Pacific University (APU) Psychology Department. She also holds an appointment as an Associate Research Psychologist at the UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs (ISAP), Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences. She has been involved in substance abuse research, evaluation, program development and training for over 20 years with multiple funded projects by the National Institutes of Health, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, California Department of Health and Human Services, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health/Mental Health, and Hilton Foundation. The projects span multiple areas, including adult and youth populations, technology-driven applications, prevention and early intervention, evidence based treatment models, continuing care programs, family based services, and co-occurring disorders.

Format
This online course uses a mixed-media format with PowerPoint slides, voice-overs, and closed captions.

Process
At the start of the training, participants will be given a pre-test assessment. During the training, participants will read or listen to the material presented in the slides. At the end of the training, participants will need to pass the training post-test with a score of 80% or better to print a certificate of completion and receive CE credits. 

CE Approval
This course meets the qualifications for one (1.0) hour of continuing education credit/contact hours (CEs/CEHs).
