Clinical Supervision in Service Settings that Serve Youth with Substance Use Issues

Description
This training is designed to help agencies develop and implement effective supervision models in behavioral health systems of care that serve youth with substance use issues. This training provides practical ways for clinical supervisors to work with staff to plan and implement a quality assurance process for ensuring effective delivery of services to youth populations using evidence-based practices. Through interactive activities, this training will help supervisors work with their staff to chart a path to become more effective within their organizations at meeting quality- driven practice performance standards (i.e., implementing outcome-data driven decision-making approaches with service delivery to youth populations).

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the importance and a minimum of two (2) goals of clinical supervision in systems of care that serve youth with substance use issues.
  2. Assess a minimum of two (2) competency areas of clinical supervision for supervisors and counseling staff within youth systems of care providing behavioral health SUD services.
  3. Identify two (2) important components of professional development plans used in clinical supervision to strengthen the relationship between supervisor and counselor.
  4. Apply one (1) model of clinical supervision to build perspective and enhance service delivery to youth with substance use issues.

Intended Audience
Healthcare professionals and treatment providers working with youth substance use populations, including Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors, Registered and Certified Counselors and associate/interns/students working under the supervision of licensed clinicians.

Instructor
Dr. Lynn Raine, PhD, LCSW & Dr. Jennifer Shepard Payne, PhD, LCSW

Lynn Raine, PhD, LCSW, has 20 years of professional social work experience in micro and macro settings. She has worked in domestic violence treatment and prevention with victims and perpetrators; has been a school-based therapist providing counseling to children in elementary, middle, and high schools; and has worked in the areas of teen pregnancy and sexual assault, and with teenage sexual offenders. She also has experience in policy work, providing legislative advocacy and creating and implementing workplace policies in the area of domestic violence prevention. Dr. Raine has coordinated different programs, and has experience providing clinical supervision. Her research interests include social work education and clinical issues with diverse populations. She also maintains a private clinical practice specializing in women’s mental health including cultural identity, perinatal/postpartum depression, grief/loss, family of origin, identity work, and trauma.

Jennifer Shepard Payne, PhD, LCSW, has many years of experience in mental health clinical practice and administration. She is the founder of DTG Counseling and Consulting, a part-time private practice where she provides acceptance and community therapy services and coaching. Her focus entails developing culturally tailored community-based depression and trauma interventions and addressing minority mental health disparities. She oversees coursework in practice intervention and advanced clinical practice.

Format
This online course uses a mixed-media format with PowerPoint slides, voice-overs, and closed captions.

Process
At the start of the training, participants will be given a pre-test assessment. During the training, participants will read or listen to the material presented in the slides. At the end of the training, participants will need to pass the training post-test with a score of 80% or better to print a certificate of completion and receive CE credits. 

CE Approval
This course meets the qualifications for one (1.0) hour of continuing education credit/contact hours (CEs/CEHs). Los Angeles County (LAC)-Department of Public Health (DPH) Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC) is an approved provider of continuing education for CMPSS (CalMHSA, #1014); CAODCs, SUDRCs, SUDCCs (CADTP, #181); RADTs I/II, CADCs-CASs, CADCs I/II, CADCs-CSs and LAADCs (CCAPP, #4-19-316-0227); and, CATCs I/II/III/IV/V/N/i/R (CAADE CEU Provider #: CP40 989 AHC 0725). Los Angeles County-Department of Public Health (LAC-DPH) Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC) is approved by the California Psychological Association to provide continuing professional education for psychologists.
