Description
Family-centered intervention services are an essential component of the youth system of care continuum. During this training, providers will gain an overview of evidence-based family intervention service models designed to improve the effectiveness of care for youth challenged with substance use related behaviors. This training includes empirical underpinnings and practice considerations essential to delivering family-centered services to youth and their families.
Learning Objectives
- Describe at least two (2) empirical underpinnings supporting the utilization of family-centered services in the youth system of care.
- Recognize at least two (2) ecological challenges associated with implementing family-centered services in substance use youth systems of care settings.
- Describe at least two (2) family-centered practice-based strategies that providers can utilize with parents and caregivers in the youth system of care.
- Identify at least two (2) specific family-centered resources that providers can include to address family-centered practice challenges with youth populations.
Intended Audience
Healthcare professionals and treatment providers working with youth substance use populations, including Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors, Registered and Certified Counselors and associate/interns/students working under the supervision of licensed clinicians.

Ken C. Winters, Ph.D.
Ken C. Winters, Ph.D. is a Senior Scientist at the Oregon Research Institute (MN location), and a consultant to the National American Indian/Alaska Native Technology Transfer Center. Previously he was a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota, where he founded and directed the Center for Adolescent Substance Abuse Research for 25 years. His primary research and training interests are adolescent drug abuse, risk and protective factors, and the role of parenting and the family in promoting adolescent health.

Format
This online course uses a mixed-media format with PowerPoint slides, voice-overs, and closed captions.
Process
At the start of the training, participants will be given a pre-test assessment. During the training, participants will read or listen to the material presented in the slides. At the end of the training, participants will need to pass the training post-test with a score of 80% or better to print a certificate of completion and receive CE credits.
CE Approval
This course meets the qualifications for one (1.0) hour of continuing education credit/contact hours (CEs/CEHs). Los Angeles County (LAC)-Department of Public Health (DPH) Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC) is an approved provider of continuing education for CMPSS (CalMHSA, #1014); CAODCs, SUDRCs, SUDCCs (CADTP, #181); RADTs I/II, CADCs-CASs, CADCs I/II, CADCs-CSs and LAADCs (CCAPP, #4-19-316-0227); and, CATCs I/II/III/IV/V/N/i/R (CAADE CEU Provider #: CP40 989 AHC 0725).
