Medication Assisted Treatment for Youth: An Overview

Description
This training will present on Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), which is an FDA-approved medication for the purpose of detoxification or maintenance treatment of alcohol or opioid use disorders. In this training, participants will learn about the epidemiology of opioid use disorders and alcohol use among youth, as well as an overview of each FDA-approved medication under MAT. The training will also provide information on MAT under a developmental framework and therapeutic service options available for youth populations within the SUD care continuum.

Learning Objectives

  1. Accurately describe the epidemiology and current trends associated with alcohol and opioid use in the United States among youth populations.
  2. Accurately identify and describe different medication assisted treatment (MAT) options for the treatment of alcohol use disorders, opioid use disorders, or both, with special developmental considerations among youth.
  3. Discuss the practical considerations when implementing a MAT program for youth populations within the SUD care continuum.

Intended Audience
Curtis Lehmann is a licensed clinical psychologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Azusa Pacific University.  His research interests include addiction and stigma, coping and posttraumatic outcomes, and religion and suicide.  In addition, he served previously as Clinic Manager of Aegis Treatment Centers in West Covina, overseeing treatment of patients with opioid addictions utilizing medication-assisted treatment and psychosocial interventions.

Format
This online course uses a mixed-media format with PowerPoint slides, voice-overs, and closed captions.

Process
At the start of the training, participants will be given a pre-test assessment. During the training, participants will read or listen to the material presented in the slides. At the end of the training, participants will need to pass the training post-test with a score of 80% or better to print a certificate of completion and receive CE credits. 

CE Approval
This course meets the qualifications for one (1.0) hour of continuing education credit/contact hours (CEs/CEHs). Los Angeles County (LAC)-Department of Public Health (DPH) Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC) is an approved provider of continuing education for CMPSS (CalMHSA, #1014); CAODCs, SUDRCs, SUDCCs (CADTP, #181); RADTs I/II, CADCs-CASs, CADCs I/II, CADCs-CSs and LAADCs (CCAPP, #4-19-316-0227); and, CATCs I/II/III/IV/V/N/i/R (CAADE CEU Provider #: CP40 989 AHC 0725).
