Description
The transition to adulthood can be a period of instability and stress for many young people, increasing and reinforcing problems with substances. Unaddressed developmental needs of transition aged youth (TAY) who use substances is a major issue. In this training, we will discuss the unique characteristics of (TAY) populations, and their needs and challenges with respect to service programming. The training will also review best practice programming approaches to implement when serving TAY populations in the youth systems of care.
Learning Objectives
- Describe at least two (2) developmental characteristics and behavioral health complexities of transition aged youth who use substances.
- Discuss at least two (2) program considerations for addressing the unique substance use needs of Transition Aged Youth (TAY) populations.
- Apply an effective programming approach to use with TAY populations, using case study examples.
- Identify at least two (2) resources for improving TAY programming in youth system settings.
Intended Audience
Healthcare professionals and treatment providers working with youth substance use populations, including Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors, Registered and Certified Counselors and associate/interns/students working under the supervision of licensed clinicians.

Sherry Larkins, Ph.D.
Sherry Larkins, Ph.D., currently directs the UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Program’s International Training and Education efforts. She has directed training, technical assistance, and evaluation initiates for local, state, and international programs. Her specialties include stimulant and opioid use, treatment for marginalized populations, HIV and sexual risk behaviors associated with substance use, mental health and co-occurring disorders, and qualitative methodologies.

Format
This online course uses a mixed-media format with PowerPoint slides, voice-overs, and closed captions.
Process
At the start of the training, participants will be given a pre-test assessment. During the training, participants will read or listen to the material presented in the slides. At the end of the training, participants will need to pass the training post-test with a score of 80% or better to print a certificate of completion and receive CE credits.
CE Approval
This course meets the qualifications for one (1.0) hour of continuing education credit/contact hours (CEs/CEHs). Los Angeles County (LAC)-Department of Public Health (DPH) Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC) is an approved provider of continuing education for CMPSS (CalMHSA, #1014); CAODCs, SUDRCs, SUDCCs (CADTP, #181); RADTs I/II, CADCs-CASs, CADCs I/II, CADCs-CSs and LAADCs (CCAPP, #4-19-316-0227); and, CATCs I/II/III/IV/V/N/i/R (CAADE CEU Provider #: CP40 989 AHC 0725).
