Description
Youth engagement in substance use disorder treatment has become an increasingly important topic of concern within the youth system of care. In this training, participants will learn about performance and outcome measures and how engagement strategies can be utilized to improve treatment outcome and retention. The training will cover various challenges to engaging youth, including motivational issues, socio-emotional developmental processes, and social trends. The training will also cover best practices for engaging youth, including motivational interviewing, developing strong therapeutic alliance, contingency management, and changes to service delivery that impact engagement.

Learning Objectives

1. Define engagement and performance standards for youth who meet medical necessity under START-ODS in LA County.
2. Describe engagement challenges with youth populations with a focus on developmental considerations.
3. Identify at least three evidence-based best practices for engaging youth seeking services along the substance use continuum of care.

Intended Audience
Healthcare professionals and treatment providers working with youth substance use populations, including Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors, Registered and Certified Counselors and associate/interns/students working under the supervision of licensed clinicians.

Instructor
Dr. Rachel Gonzales-Castaneda, PhD, MPH 

Dr. Gonzales-Castaneda is a Professor with the Azusa Pacific University (APU) Psychology Department. She also holds an appointment as an Associate Research Psychologist at the UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs (ISAP), Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences. She has been involved in substance abuse research, evaluation, program development and training for over 20 years with multiple funded projects.

Format
This online course uses a mixed-media format with PowerPoint slides, voice-overs, and closed captions.

Process
At the start of the training, participants will be given a pre-test assessment. During the training, participants will read or listen to the material presented in the slides. At the end of the training, participants will need to pass the training post-test with a score of 80% or better to print a certificate of completion and receive CE credits. 

CE Approval
This course meets the qualifications for one (1.0) hour of continuing education credit/contact hours (CEs/CEHs). Los Angeles County (LAC)-Department of Public Health (DPH) Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC) is an approved provider of continuing education for CMPSS (CalMHSA, #1014); CAODCs, SUDRCs, SUDCCs (CADTP, #181); RADTs I/II, CADCs-CASs, CADCs I/II, CADCs-CSs and LAADCs (CCAPP, #4-19-316-0227); and, CATCs I/II/III/IV/V/N/i/R (CAADE CEU Provider #: CP40 989 AHC 0725).
