Training Set: Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT) for Alcohol and Opioid Use Disorders

Description
This training provides participants with a detailed overview of FDA-approved medications that are available to treat alcohol, opioid, and tobacco use disorders within the Los Angeles County SAPC treatment network. Medications including buprenorphine, methadone, naloxone, naltrexone, acamprosate, disulfiram, bupropion, varenicline, and nicotine replacement therapy are explored. This training covers the benefits and mechanisms of action for each medication, so that substance use disorder (SUD) treatment workforce members can better utilize MAT services for their patients. Stigma and health disparities associated with MAT are explored and strategies to overcome stigma are examined. The training concludes with identifying and applying best practices in making MAT referrals.

Learning Objectives

  1. Apply at least two (2) strategies that can be used to address stigma and health disparities through increased access to medications for addiction treatment (MAT).  
  2. List at least five (5) medications that are available to treat alcohol, opioid, and tobacco use disorders in Los Angeles County Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC) treatment network and identify their benefits.  
  3. Describe how the utilization of MAT can improve patient engagement and outcomes in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. 
  4. Integrate three (3) best practices of utilizing education and behavioral techniques in making referrals to MAT.

  • Registered and Certified Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselors
  • LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs & Licensed Eligible (LE) AMFTs, ACSWs, APCCs 
  • Psychologists & Registered Psychological Associates
  • Certified Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialists & Peer Support Specialists

Format
These online courses use a mixed-media format with PowerPoint slides, voice-overs, videos, interactive games, and closed captions.

Process
Participants will read and/or listen to the material presented in the slides. At the end of the trainings, participants must obtain at least 80% as a passing score for the completion of this training and receive CE credits. CE certificate or certificate of attendance will be available for printing upon completion.
