Description
This training is designed to build a knowledge base introducing the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of using a biopsychosocial assessment to develop an individualized treatment plan while taking into consideration a patient’s immediate needs and potential imminent danger. Participants will be given a case scenario for which they are to assess risk across the six (6) ASAM dimensions, document the rationale for these risk ratings, while determining the appropriate services to be made available to assist the patient in the recovery process. The ASAM levels of care, along with the levels of withdrawal management will be reviewed. Finally, an overview of the required services under the Drug Medi-Cal Waiver will be provided, including what options for treatment exist within the Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC) Provider network.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the training, participants will be able to:
- Identify at least two (2) patient resources (strengths) and challenges for each of the six (6) dimensions of the American society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria.
- Distinguish how the five (5) broad levels of care recommended by the ASAM criteria reflect specific services that are available throughout Los Angeles County.
- Demonstrate using a clinical vignette, the application of ASAM risk rating information gathered through the multidimensional assessment.
